About Davenport FL

Before I begin telling you about all the wonderful things you can do in this location, let me give you a brief history of the area.

Davenport, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, in the United States. The population was 9,040 at the time of the 2020 census. While Davenport is a small city, the area north of town near Interstate 4 and US 27 is rapidly growing.

The Lakeland-Winter Haven Combined Statistical Area encompasses it. H.B. The current mayor, “Rob” Robinson, was elected in February 2018.

According to the City Charter, Mayor Robinson received 69.8 percent of the vote in the April 2019 municipal election, defeating former Mayor Darlene Bradley.

History of Davenport FL

Going deeper into the history of this amazing county, I’d like to inform you that during the Second Seminole War in 1838, the US military established Fort Davenport about 12 miles north of the current Davenport site.

The fort was constructed in 20-mile increments along a trail that connected Fort Brooke and Fort Mellon. The fort lasted only a few years. Colonel William Davenport, the local US commander during the war, was honored with the fort’s name.

Documentary evidence does not support the alternative claim that the city was named after a railroad conductor.

Davenport’s modern era began in the 1880s when the South Florida Railroad was extended to that location.

The settlement was originally known as Horse Creek, after the creek that was first recorded on a US Army survey in 1849 and flows past the site to enter Snell Creek and then Lake Hatchineha in the Kissimmee River system.

In 1884, a post office was established at Horse Creek, and the name was changed to Davenport in 1886. Davenport was founded in 1915.

The South Florida Railroad built a station half-a-mile north of where the city is now. A new downtown station replaced it in 1926.

It was eventually decommissioned in the 1970s. From 1958 to 1986, a second station, the Vertagreen Railroad Station, was closed to the public and only used for fertilizer transportation.
