Biography of Bill Moyers

Bill Moyers was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, on June 5, 1934. He is 88 years old. His parents were John Henry Moyers (father) and Ruby Johnson Moyers (mother). His childhood was spent in Marshall, Texas. Bill was the sole child of his parents.

Education of Bill Moyers

In terms of schooling, Moyers attended North Texas State College and majored in journalism. Moyers continued his education at The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1956.

Moreover, he also researched church and state issues and earned a Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas in 1959.

Career

Moyers began his journalism career as a reporter at the Marshall News Messenger in East Texas at the age of 16. Then, in 1954, then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson,

He was hired as a summer intern by Johnson. He stayed close to Johnson and even worked as a top advisor during Johnson’s failed attempt for the Democratic U.S. presidential nomination in 1960.

Moyers then became Johnson’s special assistant and served him from 1963 to 1967, while simultaneously serving as White House Press Secretary from 1965 to 1967. Johnson and Moyers split up in 1967, and Moyers returned to journalism.

However, Moyers worked as a publisher at Newsday, a daily metropolitan newspaper, from 1967 to 1970 after leaving Johnson. In addition, he has worked for the Public Broadcasting System (PBS), CBS, and NBC News.

During this time, he also created a number of news shows and documentaries, including the Bill Moyers Journal, The Power of Myth Series, In Search of the Constitution, A World of Ideas, and many others.

Nevertheless, his dedication to teaching society about its political concerns has not gone ignored, as evidenced by his prize collection, which includes a Lifetime Emmy Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award, over 30 Emmys, and over a dozen accolades for his exceptional journalism. 

In 1995, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.
