TAMPA, FL – Cameron Herrin, a convicted teen who hit and killed a mother and her baby while street racing on Bayshore Boulevard, wants his sentence reduced.

Cameron Herrin was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the 2018 deaths in April 2021.

His co-defendant, John Barrineau, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for six years in prison.

Herrin’s attorney, John Fitzgibbons, argued to the Second District Court of Appeal this month that the judge’s sentence was excessive.

“They are equally culpable, and if they are equally culpable, this sentence of 24 years versus six years is excessive,” Fitzgibbons argued.

However, statewide prosecutor Jonathan Hurley argued that Tampa judge Christopher Nash followed the law when he sentenced him.

Jessica Raubenolt and her one-year-old daughter Lillia were killed on Bayshore Boulevard in May 2018.

Herrin’s Ford Mustang plowed into the mother and child as they crossed the street. Raubenolt died immediately, and Lillia died a day later.

Hurley stated that Herrin was competing against Barrineau.

“There’s no doubt about it: they were racing. There’s no doubt they were trading positions on who was ahead and so on “Hurley stated.

Fitzgibbons walked off the court with one person thought.

“I’ve been privileged to practice this profession that I love for over 45 years, and this is the case that keeps me awake at night and will always keep me awake,” he said, his voice quivering.

The appeal court recently upheld Judge Nash’s sentence after hearing oral arguments two weeks ago.

Fitzgibbons told Fox 13 that the ruling is disappointing, but that they are currently weighing their options.
