Who is West Ham investor Daniel Kretinsky?
– Daniel Kretinsky Anna Kellnerova –
Daniel Kretinsky has completed his purchase of a 27% stake in West Ham United, making him the club’s second largest shareholder.
About Daniel Kretinsky
Kretinsky has now joined the board of directors, along with his business associate Pavel Horsky, joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold, and vice-chair Karren Brady.
“I am delighted that this lengthy process has now been completed,” he said.
“Football is something I am very interested in. I admire and respect West Ham United’s exceptional history and tradition, as well as its loyal and passionate fan base and the highly inspiring role it plays in many social programs and initiatives.”
The Czech businessman, estimated to be worth £3 billion, already controls British business. He became chairman of Czech giants Sparta Prague in 2004, and he is a media tycoon, owning newspapers in both his home country and France.
He reportedly dates Olympic showjumper Anna Kellnerova, who is 22 years his junior, despite keeping his personal life private.
Personal Life
Kretinsky’s romance with Olympic showjumper Anna Kellnerova is the talk of the Czech tabloids.
She is the 24-year-old daughter of his former EPH business partner Petr Kellner, who died earlier this year in a helicopter crash and was the richest man in the Czech Republic.
She, like Kretinsky’s son, attended the International School of Prague.
Kellnerova, a two-time national champion, recently competed for the Czech Equestrian Team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Her father, Petr, instilled in her work ethic and encouraged her to pursue her equestrian dream.
The ‘Czech Sphinx,’ as Kretinsky has been dubbed due to his enigmatic personality, made his fortune in energy through his company EPH, which he expanded to our shores.
In the United Kingdom, EPH owns four power plants: Eggborough in North Yorkshire, Lynemouth in Northumberland, Langage in Devon, and South Humber Bank in Lincolnshire.
The law graduate increased his stake in Royal Mail in 2020, amassing a £250 million stake in the historic FTSE250 company.
A month later, his holding company Vesa Equity Investment Sarl became J Sainsbury’s second largest shareholder, acquiring a 10% stake in the supermarket chain.
Kretinsky, who appears to be playing real-life Monopoly, has also agreed to buy Foot Locker in the United States and Macy’s in the United States.
Expect a lot of West Ham merchandise in both.
Mogul of the Media
The Czech Republic and France’s media landscapes have a Kretinsky flavor to them. EPH is the owner of several publications, including the daily tabloid Blesk, which is based in Prague.
While in Paris, Kretinsky is also the owner of the magazines Elle and Marianne. His media empire also includes the French afternoon newspaper Le Monde.
Football
Kretinsky has been the chairman of the world-famous Czech club Sparta Prague for 17 years, where players such as Tomas Rosicky and Pavel Nedved have made their names.
However, his tenure hasn’t gone as well as planned, with only four league titles since taking over in 2004. There was also a squabble with former West Ham player Tomas Repka.
After being released by the club, the fiery defender shockingly revealed how he purposefully conceded a penalty against a title rival.
“At that precise moment, I was unable to think clearly. I harmed the entire team. But I was driven by human vanity, and I wanted to make amends with Mr Kretinsky “Repka stated.
