Who is JR Moehringer?

Moehringer was born in New York City and raised in Manhasset, New York, and Scottsdale, Arizona by a single mother.

He graduated from Scottsdale’s Saguaro High School in 1982 and Yale University in 1986. He began his career in journalism as a news assistant at The New York Times.

In 1990, he relocated to Breckenridge, Colorado, to work for the Rocky Mountain News. In 1994, he began working as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times Orange County bureau.

Moreover, in 1997, the Los Angeles Times dispatched him to Atlanta as an on-the-ground reporter to cover the South. Later, his journalism work took him to Denver, Colorado.

He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing in 1998 for his article “Resurrecting the Champ”

However, he received the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing in 2000 for his article “Crossing Over” while at the Los Angeles Times.

He and his wife, book editor Shannon Welch, and their two children live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

His Achievements

In terms of awards, he received the Pulitzer Prize in 2000, the Livingston Award for Young Journalists in 1997, and the Literary Award, PEN Center USA West the same year.

He graduated from Yale University and previously worked for the Rocky Mountain News and the Los Angeles Times.

Moehringer is a fan favorite because of his professionalism and proficiency. In fact, his book ‘The Tender Bar’ has been adapted into a film.

The film has a star-studded cast and is directed by George Clooney.

Johnny Michaels, JR Moehringer’s father, worked as a disc jockey. On February 8, 2002, he died at the age of 65.

JR Moehringer Mother, Dorothy on the other hand, raised JR as a single mother. The mother-son duo shared a strong bond because they had always supported each other.

Dorothy sadly passed away on August 26, 2019. Her cause of death, on the other hand, is currently unknown.

However, JR Moehringer Mother underwent surgery in 1975 to have a tumor removed from her thyroid, as mentioned in both the book and the film.

The surgery was successful, but she had to stay in the hospital for a week. Following her death, JR Moehringer published a poem in her honor.

JR Moehringer and his mother moved back in with his grandparents after his father abandoned them.

When his parents divorced, he was only 7 months old. Uncle Charlie, on the other hand, became a father figure to him.

Moehringer’s memoir, ‘The Tender Bar,’ is also about his childhood, and he recalls his time at his uncle’s bar. He refers to it as a sanctuary.

Furthermore, the book has been adapted into a film. Ben Affleck is cast as Uncle Charlie, while Tye Sheridan and Daniel Ranieri play JR.
