Angels tap Patrick O’Neal to Serve as Part-Time Play-by-Play Announcer

Patrick O’Neal, who hosted the Angels’ pregame and postgame shows for the last eight years, will join the team’s broadcast booth as a part-time play-by-play announcer, the team and Bally Sports West announced Thursday.
O’Neal will work in tandem with Matt Vasgersian, who returns for his second season as the main play-by-play commentator but is unable to work full-time due to his responsibilities with MLB Network.
Mark Gubicza, a former major league pitcher, will return for his 16th season as Angel’s color commentator.
O’Neal replaces Rich Waltz, who was let go after last season after calling nine games as a play-by-play announcer for Gubicza.
Waltz had taken over for Daron Sutton, who had taken over for long-time play-by-play commentator Victor Rojas at the start of last season.
In 2006 and 2018, he received Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards for excellent sports reporting, while the SoCal Sports Broadcasters Association awarded him the greatest pregame and postgame host five times.
Mike DiGiovanna has been covering Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Times since 1995, covering the Angels for 19 years and the Dodgers for two.
He received Associated Press Sports Editors honors in 2001 for game-story writing, 2017 for feature writing, and 2019 for breaking news.
He began writing for The Times in 1981 as a native of East Lyme, Conn., and a graduate of Cal State Fullerton.
