He is the fourth and youngest of four children. Ostrum was twelve years old when he moved to Cleveland, where he was described as a native by MSNBC, and later attended North Hunterdon Regional High School in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

In 1987 or 1988, Ostrum married Loretta M. Lepkowski. Helenka and Leif are the couple’s two children.

With the latter following his father, he onto the stage as the lead actor in several South Lewis Central School musicals.
