About Thomas Raskin

Thomas Bloom Raskin was born on January 30, 1995, to ecstatic parents who saw him enter the world like a blue-eyed cherub, a little angel.

Tommy grew up as a strikingly beautiful curly-haired madcap boy beaming with laughter and charm, making mischief, kicking the soccer ball in the goal.

Acting out scenes from To Kill a Mockingbird with his little sister in his father’s constitutional law class.

Teaching other children the names of all the Supreme Court Justices.

Hugging strangers on the street, teaching our dogs foreign languages, running up and down the aisle on airplanes giving people high fives.

Rep. Jamie Raskin

The first few weeks of January were life-changing for Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin.

On Jan. 6, the 59-year-old Democrat was in the United States Capitol when a mob of enraged Trump supporters stormed the building, forcing lawmakers of all political stripes to flee for safety.

He also played a key role in the effort to impeach the former president for his role in inciting the violence.

And he did all of this in the shadow of an even more life-altering event: the death of his 25-year-old son, Tommy, on December 31, 2020.

The Announcement of his Son’s Death

Tommy, a second-year law student at Harvard, died in January, and the congressman said in a statement at the time that he and his wife Sarah were “devastated and demolished to be without him.”

Tommy died by suicide, according to his family, in a lengthy and emotional tribute.

Of course, the grief hasn’t subsided, butDemocrat was able to embark on what he calls an “extremely cathartic and therapeutic” journey of writing and talking about his son in the months following his death.

Raskin’s Book

Raskin’s new book, due out Jan. 4, details those harrowing first 50 days of 2021.

Which would permanently alter Raskin’s life, beginning with his son’s death and including that harrowing day at the United States Capitol.

As well as the impeachment effort led by Raskin to hold Trump accountable.

“My book is not a how-to book on grieving because I’m not aware of such a thing,” Raskin says.

“Everyone is simply on their journey in dealing with death, just as everyone is on their journey in dealing with life. I was eager to share any glimmers of understanding I had.”

The Reason for his Son’s Death

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) opened up in an emotional sit-down interview about his son’s suicide just days before the Jan. 6 insurgency at the U.S. Capitol.

And how, as a member of the House committee investigating the attack, he will not let “American democracy go down the tubes.”

“I’ve already lost my son, my most precious possession, but I’m not going to watch American democracy crumble.”

“We are fighting for our lives to defend American democracy,” he said in an interview that aired on CBS’s “Sunday Morning” on Sunday.

Tommy Raskin, Raskin’s son, committed suicide on December 31, 2020, at the age of 25 after struggling with mental illness.

It came after a particularly difficult year for the Harvard Law School student, who was taking classes remotely because of the pandemic and was particularly shaken by the violent death.

Kate Farinholt

Kate Farinholt, executive director of the National Alliance for Mental Illness of Maryland, sent a powerful message.

Farinholt believes it contributes to the reduction of stigma associated with suicide and mental illnesses such as depression.

“Stigma breeds silence,” Farinholt said. “Silence about a suicide loss only makes people feel isolated.”

And as if they’re alone in the face of tragedy.”

“When someone dies by suicide, and if the family has been public about it,” Farinholt explained, “the aftermath provides an immediate opportunity to discuss suicide as a public health issue.”

And that has an impact on all of us.

According to Farinholt, one in every five adults in the United States will suffer from some form of mental illness in a given year.

“We are all affected,” Farinholt said of the effects of mental illness.

“There isn’t a single person who hasn’t been affected in some way.”

According to Farinholt, only 43% of those with a diagnosable mental illness receive treatment.

In many cases, the first diagnosis of a mental illness is the result of a trip to the emergency room or contact with the legal system.
