Kyoko Chan Cox Is Yoko Ono’s Once-Lost Daughter Whom Her Ex-spouse Kept Away

After her ex-husband, jazz musician Tony Cox, kidnapped her when she was eight years old, Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s widow, spent decades apart from her daughter Kyoko Chan.

When Yoko Ono met John Lennon for the first time in 1966, she and he were both married.

Ono divorced her then-husband jazz musician Anthony Cox, with whom she had a daughter after they fell in love.

A bitter custody battle ensued, and Cox settled the matter by kidnapping their 8-year-old daughter Kyoko Ono Cox. Cox joined a cult and vanished with Kyoko, and Ono would not see her daughter for another 23 years.

The Cost Of Love

Initially, it appeared that Ono’s divorce from Cox would be amicable, according to Lennon, and no formal custody agreement for Kyoko was filed. However, things between the ex-couple deteriorated over time, and Cox absconded with the child.

Before deciding to sue for custody in the United States Virgin Islands, where Ono and Cox’s divorce had been filed, Lennon and Ono searched for the child from America to England, Denmark, and Spain.

Winning Kyoko

When the Lennons went to take custody of Kyoko in the US Virgin Islands, they discovered that Cox had relocated to Texas and was countersuing them.

The battle for Kyoko recommenced, but when Cox realized that Ono and Lennon were on the verge of winning the case after agreeing to the Judge’s stipulation that they raise Kyoko in America, he fled with his daughter.

To avoid being discovered by Ono and Lennon, Cox and Kyoko lived under aliases for two decades.

Losing Kyoko

Cox and Kyoko vanished without a trace in December 1971, and despite Lennon and Ono’s best efforts and considerable resources, they could not be found. Ono would not hear from Kyoko for another nine years.

When the Lennons went to take custody of Kyoko in the US Virgin Islands, they discovered that Cox had relocated to Texas and was countersuing them.

Living With a Cult

Cox later revealed that he and Kyoko had sought refuge with a friend who belonged to The Walk, a pseudo-Christian cult.

Cox, his wife Melinda, and their young daughter were members of the cult in rural Iowa, and he converted.

He rose through the ranks of the cult to become an elder and a “prophet,” but he became disillusioned with The Walk.

Cox decided to leave in 1978, and his wife Melinda divorced him and remained in the community.

Life On The Run

The only contact Ono had with her daughter – she didn’t even know if she was alive – was when John Lennon died in 1980.

Sean Ono Lennon, the couple’s only child, was born in 1975, and the then-5-year-old had never met his sister. Ono was lonely. Her grief over John Lennon’s death drove her to withdraw.

Kyoko’s Life

Cox always maintained that his daughter wished to remain out of the spotlight and away from the uproar surrounding her mother, and Ono wrote an open letter to her daughter in 1986, in which she stated that she loved her and thought of her every day.

Kyoko, a 31-year-old married mother, made contact with Ono in 1997.

They reunited. Kyoko introduced her mother to her two children and husband after meeting her brother Sean.

Together at Last

Kyoko has remained close to her now-87-year-old mother ever since. Kyoko avoids the spotlight and lives in Colorado with her family, where she has followed in her mother’s footsteps and works as an artist.
