The Story
It’s a love story. So, of course, it begins in the winter of two years ago in a café in Minneapolis.
“It was simply one of those times,” Ana Dayton, née Orke, recalls of meeting her former boss, former Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton.
Ana, then 30, had worked for Mark, then 71, for several years. But there they were, face to face once more.
“It felt like no time had passed, but so much had changed,” Ana remembers. “So we immediately scheduled a time to meet and catch up.”
I don’t think either of us had any idea where it would lead, but as Mark stated, “the rest is joyful history.”
The Unexpected Twist
However, because this is a highly specific love story, there are several unexpected twists: Ana, now 32, is 41 years younger than her 73-year-old new husband, whom she has known for most of her life.
She met Mark at a high school fundraiser and later interned in his Senate office after graduation.
She worked on his first gubernatorial campaign in 2010, but her career path took her elsewhere until “nearly exactly two years ago,” she recalls.
They had no idea they were on their way to romance. “It happened gradually,” Ana says. They met for supper and then again. Things began to get amorous about a year ago.
“I got to know the feelings of the person I got to know professionally as an adult and just fell in love with who he is,” Ana says of Mark.
“His ideals as governor are the same values that are essential to me personally.”
“And that age disparity, I must say, gave me pause,” she says. “But the love has grown to mean more than the years between us.” So it didn’t really matter after a while.”
Mark
Mark, who departed the governorship in 2019, has been a bachelor for a long time following two prior marriages. (He has two grown sons.)
The wedding was a surprise, but only to the general public: He and Ana got engaged in the summer; Mark claims he decided “sometime in the spring” and proposed in his apartment in June.
Marriage
They married on Saturday, a pandemic-era adaption after realizing the larger event would have to be postponed until later next year.
“It meant a lot to us,” Ana adds. “It was the date we picked to marry, and we believed it would be meaningful to still go through the legal portion so that we could get married as planned, rather than dealing with the disappointment of having to wait for everything.”
