Biography
Ildaura Murillo-Rohde was born in Panama on September 6, 1920. In 1945, she immigrated to the United States.
In 1948, she graduated from the Medical and Surgical Hospital School of Nursing with a nursing diploma.
Teachers College, Columbia University, awarded her an undergraduate degree in the teaching and supervision of psychiatric nursing.
She graduated from Columbia with an MA in teaching and curriculum development and an MEd in education and administration.
Murillo-Rohde was the first Hispanic nurse to receive a Ph.D. from New York University in 1971. (NYU).
Career
Her nursing career began in San Antonio, Texas, a city with a large Hispanic population.
She discovered that there were very few Hispanic nurses in the community.
This experience strengthened her resolve to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at Columbia University in New York.
She continued her education, earning Masters’s and Doctorate degrees from New York University.
Dr. Rohde obtained a federal position reviewing research and educational grants in the 1970s.
She had the same experience as in San Antonio, with no Latina nurses in academic settings, research, or public policy, and she was inspired to make a difference.
Dr. Rohde received a Fellowship from the American Academy of Nursing, one of nursing’s highest honors.
Always on the move. She was Dean and Professor Emeritus of SUNY’s School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York.
She was always active in nursing, serving as faculty, then as a professor, and then as Dean of Nursing at SUNY.
Among her other honors was being named as the International Federation of Business and Professional Women’s permanent representative to UNICEF in New York.
Her Achievements
Dr. Rohde was always present in the midst of NAHN conferences until her health prevented her from doing so, and she always wore an orchid provided by her members.
The Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Award for Education Excellence by a Hispanic R.N. is given to NAHN members who have excelled in scholarship and or nursing education.
Outstanding contributions to nursing education, research, and practice; a recognized commitment to nursing excellence.
And distinguished clinical expertise is required for this award.
Furthermore, NAHN provides the Dr. Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Scholarship to Hispanic students enrolled in a nursing program leading to licensure.
NAHN has chosen to recognize and honor this nurse for her accomplishments and dedication.
Dr. Rohde was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.
